The Easiest Problem to
Solve is the One that Never Occurs
"Boss, I've
got a bomb to drop, I'm giving my two weeks notice." Sound familiar?
Your key person is leaving at the worst possible time with so many critical
projects hanging in the balance. Not uncommon for overworked and under appreciated
employees to do in a talent starved market.
What to do? Ahh,
the counteroffer; we'll beg, appeal to their sense of fair play, use guilt
and promises of more help, more money, better conditions, promotions, ...etc!
It's too late.
When you hear "two weeks notice" that is not the time to suddenly
notice your key people and shower promises on them.
Even if you are
successful in your begging and pleading you will have lost one key element
in any successful relationship... trust. You will have postponed what
was meant to be and more likely than not the relationship will die a slow
agonizing death versus an amicable and professional parting.
Typically counter-offers
in any variety don't work. What does work is the work of listening, communicating
and satisfying employee needs so that you aren't the recipient of the "bomb."
